THE MATERIAL

Digital Eyewear.

Clear, translucent and opaque frames. Explore the material developed by Henkel and GENERA.

Mission Eyewear frames in translucent colors

Mission Eyewear materials have been extensively tested to fulfill all the needs for eyewear frames. Henkel and GENERA together made a set of materials that allows the printing of clear, translucent, and opaque frames in any color.

Finally, materials with aesthetics, high-quality surface finish, true colors, and durability are available for 3D printed eyewear.

Rigorous testing

Mission Eyewear material testing

The following material test summary comes from Mission Eyewear. The linked report provides the test context; results are not a guarantee for every use condition.

Heat Resistance: Withstands temperatures up to 55 °C without warping or losing shape – even when left in a hot car.

Flame Resistance: Material does not ignite or glow when exposed to a 650 °C heated wire.

Sweat Resistance: No corrosion, discoloration, or surface damage – even after exposure to artificial perspiration.

Mechanical Stability: Built to endure daily wear and tear – strong and reliable in real-life use.

UV Resistance: No fading or surface change – colors stay vibrant even under intense sunlight.

Non-Toxic to Cells: Lab-tested using cultured cells to confirm that our material does not harm living tissue.

Skin Irritation Test: Our material achieved the best possible result at all time points, confirming it causes no irritation.

Long-Term Durability: Tested over 6 weeks under intense UV light to simulate real-life sun exposure.

Memory effect

Digital Acetate has balanced properties with high modulus and impact resistance.
It also exhibits a memory effect when heated to 70-80°C. The shape of the frame can be adjusted at elevated temperatures, and by reheating the frame, it will return to its original shape.

A colorful universe

Dive into a universe of infinite different vivid colors.

From transparent to translucent, all colors are fantastic and not comparable to any 3D printed frame colors you have seen before. This is because our material "Digital Eyewear" is transparent and so you can have the brightest colors.

Earth in the Mission Eyewear sustainability story

The world is increasingly recognising the urgent need for sustainable manufacturing. GENERA is addressing this need with Mission Eyewear and In-Shop 3D printing for a more sustainable production process and reduced supply chain emissions.

Mission Eyewear reports savings of up to 90% in CO₂ emissions compared with production of an acetate frame. This is a source claim tied to its production comparison; the actual impact depends on the workflow and assumptions.
